It has to be said (since I had one previous run-in with the legal department of the LEGO company, but that's neither here nor there), that this page is in no way affiliated with the LEGO Company (Canada or otherwise) and is not endorsed by the aforementioned company.

This weekend at the University of Guelph is the Grande Sumo Showoff. Ahhh, here it is!!! Ready for U o' Gu! My second Sumo robot (no pics of the first for it lasted a day and my camera was on a trip.) It's solid LEGO--it's pretty heavy. The 'bot just fits inside 1 cubic foot (which was the stipulation in the rules). |
| I think it's going to kick some major heinie!!! Note the gear on the top--it was part of the gear train for the front forks... I had geared it down considerably and, due to torque, it ripped apart. I have since put a clutch gear in it, hopefully it will prevent future gear breakage.

Here we have pics of the University of Guelph's first annual LEGO robot competition. Pictured left is the University's entry, made by Victor. It was set up for defence. |
Calum's entry, a very low robot with double treads. See Calum's homepage here |

Iain's ramp 'bot. It was very fast and maneuverable. I should go over the rules a sec... The rules of the competition are as follows: the 'bot has to be smaller than 1 cubed foot, and you had to push your opponent outside the white circle. That's it. |

Calum's and Iain's 'bots going head to head. |

My cube 'bot against Victor's robot. My friends look on at the competition. |

Chris's robot, using a wonderfully designed worm gear setup to transfer power from the motors to the wheel axles going against Iain's ramp 'bot. See Chris's homepage here. |
|
| Iain's ramp was such a great idea. It even got under the overweighted cube 'bot. |

A quick redesign of the cube 'bot to try to circumvent Iain's ramp 'bot. |
|
| Chris's worm gear 'bot and my cube 'bot moving around. They were the two slowest 'bots so it always took a while for them to find one another. |

This is the story of the tortoise (Chris's worm gear 'bot) and the hare (Iain's ramp 'bot). Fun to watch. |

More pics of the bouts between the robots. |

The showdown--Dave's cube 'bot against Iain's ramp 'bot. Iain won and his robot drives off into the sunset... (go with me here, imagine it) |
|
|
The final bout--an all out melee!!! This is where it gets really fun! There was much mayhem between the 5 'bots. As you can see in the bottom center picture that Chris's machine gave up the ghost. In the bottom right picture you might notice that Iain's ramp came off. Much fun. |
