It has to be said (since I had one previous run-in with the legal department of the LEGO company, but that's neither here nor there), that this page is in no way affiliated with the LEGO Company (Canada or otherwise) and is not endorsed by the aforementioned company.

The Concept:
Capture the Flag!
The Problem:
There's a 1 foot gap between your 'bot and the flag!
Here's a good view of the setup--3 tables, spaced 1 foot apart. The flag is on the center table, and the 'bot competitors start on the outside tables. In this pic you can see lots of testing going on. |
Ka-On's 'bot would push the bridge device to the edge of the table, at which point, the bridge would fall across the gap. The 'bot would then drive across the bridge, and then find the flag. A great concept! To the left you can see Chris's 'bot.
Iain doing some last minute programming touch-ups on his joint-effort 'bot with Calum.
Three 'bots--Matthias's Bridge'bot in the back corner, Trevyn's Bridge/Wire 'bot in the middle, and Rob S.'s Bridge'bot to the right.
Same three 'bots but in a different order--Rob S.'s to the left, Trevyn's in the center, and you can barely see Matt's at the top right.

John and Ivan's bridge extender 'bot.
Rob S.'s 'bot getting a finely tuned update.

Ka-On tests his 'bot. Many 'bots can be seen in this pic, starting with Ivan and John's Bridge'bot (black, back left), then Doug's Extenda'bot (white base), Ka-On's 'bot and Trevyn's Bridge'bot (bottom right).
Jeff VW brings an untested multi'bot, and proceeds to work on it before the competiton.
A close look at Trevyn's Bridge'bot. All the wires allowed the RCX units to be separate from the moveable 'bots, thus cutting down on the weight of the robots.
Bruce brought a great reaching arm 'bot.
One of the best parts about rtlToronto 'bot competitions is the talking and exchanging of ideas that takes place each time we get together. Here Matthias, John and Rob S. discuss the intracacies of Rob's expandable bridge. On the table you can see the 'bots from Matthias, Chris and Bruce.
Iain and Calum test their 'bot, whilst Rob looks on. Bruce's 'bot can be seen to the right.
John and Ivan set up their 'bot while Trevyn watches. You can see Trevyn's 'bot and Doug's 'bot at the bottom of the picture.
Iain and Calum modify their 'bot on the fly! Plano boxes are the LEGO 'bot designer's bestest friends!
Bruce runs another test with his 'bot. The testing and updating process takes a while!
Derek brings a different design for a 'bot. Though bigger than the 1 foot cubed allowance, his 'bot had great potential--I call it the rollercoaster 'bot!
Ivan and John's 'bot going thru one more test!
Look at all those wonderful blue rtlToronto shirts!

Iain, Calum, Rob Z, and Chris talking right before the beginning of the competition.
Doug and Matt's 'bots at the start of the first match.
Two bridge'bots going head-to-head--Calum's and Iains at the top, and John and Ivan's at the bottom.
Chris's extenda-arm 'bot attempting to hit the flag. Hey Chris, why don't you program the 'bot to wiggle back and forth after it deploys the arm? Maybe you'll have a better chance to hit the flag!
Doug's 'babygate' 'bot against Ka-On's bridge'bot.
Iain and Calum's 'bot gets a point for touching the flag! Trevyn's bridge'bot having some technical issues.
Doug's 'bot extending--It was quite a sight!
The spectators watch on! Check out Jeff E's 'bot--It was the only 'bot that didn't use an RCX!
The entire competition came down to two bridge'bots--Rob S.'s and John and Ivan's.
So we had a final 2 out of 3 playoff between these two great 'bots.
And the winner is... (are) Ivan and John! Here's Chris shaking their hands.
And here's our first prize donator shaking the hands of the winners!

Oh, here's the scorecard at the end of the match. The scoring went off without a hitch and was wonderfully done! (if I do say so myself!)

rtl11 isn't just about the flag capturing contest--People can bring in their creations for us to check out. Here we see Doug's Delta 'bot.
More of Doug's creations!

Though I didn't get a robot to this competition, I had a great time watching all the 'bots at work.
I didn't get a chance to get pics of all the different entries--I was a little busy scoring.
A good time was had by all! Thanks to Calum and Chris for organizing the event!
