It has to be said (since I had one previous run-in with the legal department of the LEGO company, but that's neither here nor there), that this page is in no way affiliated with the LEGO Company (Canada or otherwise) and is not endorsed by the aforementioned company.

Block Grabber The 7th semi-annual Robotic Competition run by rtlToronto, "The Plastic Dust is Normal", happened on February 17, 2001. The competition: Grab blocks in the arena and stack them on top of one another. Taking apart my first block stacker (which Iain saw live on my webcam'bot), I set out to design a newer, bigger, better one. Block Grabber

Block Grabber Well, the fateful day dawned, and, after pulling a few all-nighters, we made it to Toronto, tired and untried (that'd be us who were tired and the 'bot being untried). There were many people there to view the competition. To the left, in the arena you can see Chris's pneumatic 'bot. To the right, Bruce is starting his 'bot and our runamok 'bot is already moving around on the field. Block Grabber

Block Grabber Rick starts the runamok 'bot, geting it ready to compete. The runamok 'bot navigating the walls. Block Grabber

Block Grabber Rob's wonderfully intricate elevator 'bot. Iain's 'hammerhead shark' 'bot. Block Grabber

Block Grabber If you can make your 'bot dance, you captivate the audience. Iain's 'bot did just that. Another pic of the runamok 'bot. Block Grabber

Block Grabber Iain and Chris's 'bot, going at it--head to head fierce competition, who can stack the most blocks? Block Grabber

Block Grabber Chris updating some code for his 'bot. His air powered 'bot back on the field. The onlookers look on. Block Grabber   Block Grabber

Block Grabber Runamok 'bot and Bruce's 'bot competing for blocks. Whenever these two 'bots were in the same arena, flying pieces would ensue (usually off the runamok 'bot). Bruce's 'bot won the competition in the end. It made a stack 13 blocks tall! Block Grabber

Block Grabber Rob's elevator 'bot with runamok 'bot. Bruce's bot with runamok 'bot. Much fun was had by all watching the competitions. Block Grabber

Block Grabber Bruce's 'bot seen from the perspective of a block. A pic of the runamok 'bot. Block Grabber

Block Grabber Few more pics of the runamok 'bot. Perhaps it was a wee bit too big... Block Grabber   Block Grabber

Block Grabber There was also a sumo competition for those that brought their wrestling 'bots. Block Grabber

Block Grabber More sumo pics. I was busy fixing the issues with the runamok 'bot so I didn't get enought pics of this fine competition. I'm told it was very good. It certainly looked like fun. Block Grabber

Block Grabber Others brought fun and neat robotic designs, like this walking red dinosaur. Much fun. Block Grabber

Block Grabber And a non-LEGO robot. A very small 'bot brought by Hitoshi. The 'bot follows your finger around. Very cute. Block Grabber

Thanks to Rick for programming and help modifying the runamok 'bot. Thanks to John for helping modify the 'bot and taking some of these pics. Unfortunately, again, we were experiencing technical difficulties with our Runamok 'bot and that was taking up most of my time in modifications, I didn't get to socialize as much as I wanted.
