It has to be said (since I had one previous run-in with the legal department of the LEGO company, but that's neither here nor there), that this page is in no way affiliated with the LEGO Company (Canada or otherwise) and is not endorsed by the aforementioned company.

How to start the story...
Well, first, here is LOR on my desk at work, and then, slightly modified, at home |
So, about LOR--I wanted to make a totally contained walking robot that would have the ability to stop, turn and just move around. |
A closeup of some mechanisms. LOR fall down, go boom! |
From the bottom--the two motors run the compressor. Above that, there are 2 sets of 2 pneumatic switches, for a total of 4, and then I do it all over again above that to get 8 pneumatic switches. All those black bricks at the top hide the arm motors and mechanisms. Center is a pneumatic valve/cut-off switch to stop the compressor. |

Must... achieve... classic... Lorne... Greene... pose... from... Battlestar... Galactica... before... glue... dries... |
In the end, LOR (LEGO Operated Robot) was an experiment to see if I could build a walking robot. As of now, it doesn't work. I can't seem to get the ankle joint strong enough to rotate the 'bot so it can change directions.
That said, I may still try a few differnt ideas later, but it's been an intense week and a half of building.
Right now, it has 8 functioning pneumatic valves operated by 4 electric motors, two arms that are jointed in the shoulder as well as the elbow, gripping hands, and--right now--one rotating ankle that works when there's no weight on it. Oh yes, one set of toes as well.
It will walk manually if the user throws the pneumatic valves back and forth in the right sequence, so that's a good bit.
I will need at least 3 RCX's to make this 'bot completely automated. That part I haven't even started yet.

Woke up this morning and felt like working on LOR. |
Felt like 'Mad Scientist Guy' when LOR looked like this--parts and pieces that still resembled a 'bot strewn about, and wires and pipes hanging out everywhere.
This is a pretty good pic of my work area--my living room floor. Maybe when I get a larger abode, I'll have a good work area, but for now, this'll do. |

Oh look--I have a head! Oh look! I lost some weight! Wow! What happened here? |
So I put more work into LOR this evening--basically rebuilt it from the feet up.
Waiting for a BrickLink order to finish the hardware.
I made the torso narrower, as well as much lighter--the pneumatic cylinders were having a difficult time lifting all that weight so I tried to cut some weight out.
Right now the 'bot is fully articulated--though the feet are not done.
It balances in its different poses, but moving from pose to pose might be an issue.
The upper arm has full 360 degree rotation, though that probably won't stay like that 'cause I have to get the pneumatic pipe to the hands.
I'll see what happens tomorrow night.
